Beginning of 2020, the winners of the “HyLand” regional funding programme launched by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) were announced. The aim of the funding is to support integrated concepts for the production and use of green hydrogen and thus to establish a regional hydrogen economy. In the “HyStarter” category, the Rügen-Stralsund region is one of nine selected winning regions.
In one of the first information events, KEYOU had the opportunity to show the core team of the Rügen-Stralsund region the potential of the hydrogen combustion engine (#H2ICE) in a webinar. For a good hour (presentation, Q&A), Cornelius Preil (KEYOU) spoke about applications in the transport and mobility sector, but above all about agricultural applications, in which the participants from the far north were particularly interested. One point of discussion was the purity of hydrogen and the differences between fuel cells and #hydrogen engines. Cornelius Preil explained that fuel cells require clean intake air in addition to high purity hydrogen, which is not always guaranteed in agricultural or construction applications. A hydrogen engine, on the other hand, not only copes with dusty ambient air, it also suffices to have a hydrogen purity of only 98 %, which also makes the production of the fuel considerably cheaper.
Many thanks to the HyStarter-Team Rügen-Stralsund for the invitation and the good organisation, as well as thanks to all participants for the friendly atmosphere and the interesting questions!
